People have great instincts when it comes to finding out who is being honest and who is a liar. However, there are times when even the strongest mind can’t distinguish if someone is lying or not. Thus, how to know for sure if someone is telling the truth or only manipulating you?
Below is a list of the main signs which show that someone may be lying to you.
- People who are lying tend to change their head position quickly. When you ask someone a personal question and they don’t want you to know the truth, they will change their head position quite fast. For example, before the question they looked right into your eyes and after they heard the question they turned away and bowed their head down.
- Their breathing may also change. Another way to tell if someone is lying or not is to notice differences in their breathing. Psychologists agree that a person who is lying starts to breathe heavily. It is because they are nervous – their heartbeat gets faster which makes them breathe heavier.
- They tend to stand very still. When we are talking, we usually move our hands, heads and bodies in general. But when a person is about to lie, he usually stands still as if waiting for confrontation.
- They may repeat words or phrases. Liars repeat words they just said in order to not only convince you, but also to convince themselves. Also, repeating words gives them more time to create more lies.
- They may provide too much information. People who lie usually expose information which is not needed. They like telling elaborate stories because they believe that in this way others will believe them more.
- They may touch or cover their mouth. When people cover their mouths, it means that they don’t want to tell you the truth.
- They tend to instinctively cover vulnerable body parts. Just like covering their mouths, liars usually cover their vulnerable body parts when they are talking. Usually such body parts are head, abdomen, chest or throat.
- They tend to shuffle their feet. This sign indicates that a liar wants to escape from a situation which makes him nervous or uncomfortable.
- It may become difficult for them to speak. Because liars get nervous, their mouths dry out and it makes it harder and harder for them to speak.
- They may stare at you without blinking much. People think that liars avoid keeping eye contact. However, there are also those liars which can look you right in the eyes and don’t blink. They think that in this way they are more convincing.
- They tend to a point a lot. When liars are being confronted, they can become quite aggressive. In addition to pointing a lot, they can even get physically abusive.
